The Ditch – Beachside

The captain will ferry you to the far shore, right onto the banks of the Ditch. This is where your adventure truly begins. If you need to head back, speaking with the captain again will return you to the Hive Port.

Note: Once you begin exploring new locations within the Sewers, you will unlock the ability to fast travel within the area. Keep in mind that the mod features its own custom map, which replaces the original campaign map while you are inside the Ditch. If you want to return to the original fast travel map, you must head back to the Hive.

A massive beast – The Animator – serves as a living signpost for the Ditch. It can point you toward locations such as the Vertical Sea and the Suicide Falls.

In the center of the shore, you will encounter the Ideal Beach Body – a creature with the face of a young woman, clad in a fraying swimsuit. You can purchase crab crisps from her. If the Nameless One buys and eats her entire stock (by consistently asking for more), his Constitution will permanently increase by +1, at the cost of a -1 penalty to Charisma.

You will also find beachgoers wandering the shore. If your Charisma is high enough (18+), the Nameless One can rest with some of them. However, a Nameless One with low Charisma (11 or lower) might terrify the women, causing them to flee.

A beach bouncer stands guard on the bridge. He won’t be inclined to talk to you– at least not until you attempt to return to the beach. At that point, he will demand a toll of 100 copper pieces to pass.

  • A character with high Dexterity (14+ and a Thief profile) can pickpocket him.
  • High Strength (15+) allows you to intimidate him.
  • High Intelligence (14+) or Wisdom (15+) unlocks diplomatic options (which ultimately lead to a Strength check of 15+).
  • Alternatively, you can resort to violence. If your Strength is high enough (19+), if you have a full party, or if Vhailor is in your crew, the man will back down out of fear and stop trying to extort you.

Past the bridge, a vagrant named Adrean will approach you. For 20 copper pieces, he will give you the rundown on local attractions in the Ditch. You can haggle with him if your Charisma is high enough (at 16+ you only pay 10 coppers, and at 19+ Adrean will talk to you for free).

Inside one of the shipping containers in this section of the Ditch, you will find a book titled The Ditch: Of Sigil and the Sea. Hang onto it, as it will be useful later when you are gathering books for the librarian.

The Ratcatcher can sell you rat tails. Nearby, the human wreck is a deeply traumatized man upon whom you can use your Stories-Bones-Tell ability.

You will also meet a theoretical bricklayer who claims that pores – the microscopic holes inside every brick – might actually be portals to the wildest fringes of the multiverse. If the Nameless One has a relatively high Intelligence (15+), he can critique the man’s theories. Furthermore, if you have Nordom in your party, a unique dialogue option will unlock, yielding a substantial experience point bonus.

A Yagnoloth – a massive, heavily muscled fiend – is also pacing around the area. He will reveal that he is hunting for wererat thieves. You can either expose their hideout (if you have already discovered it) or lie about their whereabouts.

Lastly, you will find the entrance to the Rivergate tavern (where Prod, the imp you are searching for, is being held captive), alongside pathways leading to the Ditch settlement and the Suicide Falls.

Heading east will lead you into a dead end.

Dead End

Naked dandy

Here you will encounter a naked dandy who has had his clothes stolen. If the Nameless One agrees to help him, the culprit – a girl in a red dress – can be found at the Suicide Falls.

She will inform you that she has already sold the clothes to a seamstress at the marketplace. You can either track down and retrieve the garments to return them to the young man, or bluntly tell him he’s been duped and walk away.

If you mock the young man, your alignment will shift toward Chaotic, and Fall-from-Grace’s morale (if she is in the party) will drop. Furthermore, if you belong to the Xaositects faction, you can steal the boy’s clothes a second time (provided you already returned them to him).

Inside the Rivergate tavern, you will find Prod, the imp Tergush’tekhn sent you to rescue. If you attempt to approach him immediately upon entering, Black Joseph and his crew will spring a trap that teleports you outside. Attempting to speak to Prod a second time triggers the same trap, casting you out of the tavern and straight into the toxic waters of the Ditch.

You can ask the bartender, Brill, or Akershus the bard about the trap. Speaking with Brill utilizes a unique reputation system – the Slaad will only share information if you win him over. To do this, you need reputation points, which can be earned by:

  • Correctly deducing that Brill is a Slaad (requires Intelligence 15+).
  • Drinking Rui’s Boulder and highly praising the brew.
  • Drinking Rat Vomit (requires Intelligence 13+; drinking it results in a permanent loss of -1 Constitution).
  • Ordering and consuming the water from the Ditch.
  • Acting completely unhinged in front of Brill (requires hints from Akershus) by slapping yourself and meowing.

If your character has a Chaotic alignment or leans heavily toward it (frequently lying, breaking promises, or acting impulsively), you will gain Brill’s favor with minimal effort.

Warning: You can easily lose your hard-earned reputation by spilling the water you ordered, mistaking Brill for a Hydroloth or a Hezrou, or dropping a mug of Pandemonium Ale.

If you have built up enough reputation, Brill will reveal how to bypass the trap. However, his help comes at a price – he will task you with recovering his stolen property from a Gith named Ikss’odes (who can be found in the Residential Area).

Alternatively, you can provoke the gang and free Prod by attacking any of Black Josephs thugs, or pickpocket Brill for the portal key (the goblet from „Rivergate” tavern). Adonis, a Harmonium guard, also carries a duplicate goblet (whom you can rob or kill).

Brill’s menu also features The Lady’s Tears (requires Charisma 16+), a unique spirit that grants a massive attribute bonus depending on what you focus on while drinking it:

  • Pain: +2 Constitution
  • Loss: +60,000 Experience Points
  • Understanding: +2 Intelligence
  • Power: +2 Strength
  • Responsibility: +2 Wisdom
  • Influence: +2 Charisma

You can report crimes to Adonis, such as Ikss’odes’s theft. The flow of your conversation with the guard depends heavily on the Nameless One’s alignment – you can provoke him into a fight, discourage him from his duties, simply listen to him, or coax him toward the path of Chaos. With a high enough bluff (requires Charisma 21), you can even convince Adonis to attack Black Joseph in a doomed, unsuccessful attempt to rescue Prod.

A skeleton named Tripler occasionally visits the tavern. Between the hours of 6am and 1pm, you can find him in the Rat and Splat; from 2pm to 9pm, he is at the Rivergate; and during the remaining hours, he drinks at The Styx Oarsman. He is tied to a quest involving understanding the „plague of threes” (see: The Rat and Splat).

Akershus the bard will sing you a song for 15 copper pieces. Speaking with him can also trigger a memory regarding a female tattooist from Rigus (requires Wisdom 16).

Freeing the Imp

Once you have bypassed or neutralized the trap guarding Black Joseph and Prod, you can finally speak with the thugs. You can bluff Joseph into handing Prod over (requires Charisma 18), intimidate him (requires Strength 18), or bribe him (requires Charisma 14 and 10,000 copper pieces). Standard combat is always an option as well.

Once Prod is freed, the party can speak with him. The imp will gleefully note that the Abishai’s sent someone to save him. He will then join your party, appearing as a usable „item” in your inventory.

You can question Prod about the shifting portal to Cania. He will direct you to The Styx Oarsman tavern, where you must speak to the Yugoloths.
