The Ditch – Residential Area

When we first enter the Residential Area of the Ditch, we will encounter the bariaur Teik arguing with two humans at the top of the stairs: Vorrak and Clausius. With a high enough Wisdom (15), the protagonist will be able to recognize them as representatives of the Fated and Doomguard factions. During the conversation, Teik will mention the name of Haer’Dalis (you might remember this gentleman from Baldur’s Gate), who is the subject of their dispute.

Nearby, we will meet Echo, a woman with a melodic voice who repeats our every word. If the Nameless One attacks her, his alignment stats will significantly drop. A skilled thief can steal several items from her, including the Mirror of Images.

Isey is an emaciated man with empty eye sockets. We can help him see the world again, provided we possess eyeballs with magical properties (the Nameless One’s eye and the glass eye do not count toward this quest), such as:

  • The Philosopher’s Eye, which can be obtained from the wererats Zenon and Elea (in Beneath Zaddfum Trestle – location north of the residential area)
  • The Kaleidoscopic Eye, received from Iannis in the Lower Ward (by asking for Record 51-AA)
  • The Fiendish Eye of Kalem’Darr – in the possession of Ravel Puzzlewell
  • The Angle-Less Eye – carried by Quint in the Buried Village and Vrishika in the Clerk’s Ward; another can be found in Pharod’s Vault
  • The Eye of Vecna (Vrishika in the Clerk’s Ward)

We can give him either one or two eyeballs. For restoring his sight, we will gain a scroll of Blindness and experience points.

Standing near the statue of Athena, a charismatic tiefling will eagerly tell us about the Olympian deities. If our hero has high Intelligence (21), they will notice that the speaker is rambling nonsense, while high Wisdom (21) allows us to expose him as a fraud. If the Nameless One has low Dexterity (14 or lower), the tiefling will pickpocket him. However, if we meet the Dexterity criteria, we will notice the theft attempt as we walk away – we can then either observe his technique or catch him red-handed and attack.

The tiefling is also connected to a quest to get rid of a thug bothering Adam the Blacksmith. At the blacksmith’s shop, we can also purchase gear and sell any unwanted inventory.

A bizarre “abishai?” also patrols the settlement. If we speak to it, it quickly turns out to be kids dressed up as a fiend. We can intimidate them (requires 15 Strength) or attack. Striking the abishai costume will cause it to fall to pieces, and three shitlings will run out of it.

In the settlement square, we will meet Alviro, who won’t be keen on talking to us until we help his patients (we must assist at least three). The protagonist can steal several valuable items from him, including the Amulet of the Heart, the Amulet of the Body, and the Tears of Sorrow (which cast the Elysium Tears spell). The patients we can heal are:

  • The Bloodied Boy waiting in line for Alviro, whom we can help with a broken arm (different options to improve his situation require meeting Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence criteria at level 14); we can also give him a bandage if we have one in our inventory (a few can be found on a nearby table).
  • The Stoner – another patient near the celestial, who has a problem with „stones”; we can give him various stones from our inventory, including a cobblestone (does nothing), the gem from Moridor’s Box (triggers a fight with a lemure copy, but helps the Stonemason), a portal lens, iron ore (which he will ultimately refuse), the Stone Gullet of L’Phahl the Gross (does nothing), and the bronze sphere (which remains in our inventory but makes the Stonemason wiser, causing him to leave). If we have been to the Civic Festhall, we can also suggest that he go to the Sensate Sensorium.
  • The Amnesiac, who has a drinking problem and suffers from memory gaps, so simply suggesting that he drank too much is enough; we can also encourage him to go to Brill’s Tavern, provided we have a positive reputation with the slaad (this will also grant us an additional reputation point). With high enough Wisdom (15+), we can jog a memory that reveals the man belongs to a cult called the Children of the Vine.
  • Sulfur Stefan, the last patient in line, whom we can heal if Fall-From-Grace is in our party.

If we heal at least three patients, Alviro will become more willing to converse. We can use his shop (stocked with bandages, amulets, and scrolls), benefit from his healing abilities, or volunteer to help. The celestial arrived in Sigil on a mission to find the holy weapon of the god Girru. He will direct us to Kabatum the Summoner, who resides in his residence in the Vertical Sea.

Near Alviro, we will also find Guvner Girgosh from the Fraternity of Order. The Guvner watches the murky depths of the Canal waters, believing that Cassie, the canal beast, lives there. If we visit him at night, we can suggest he find an assistant, such as a kobold (requires knowledge of the concept of infravision, mentioned by Prod). If Annah is in the party, we can ask her if she believes in Cassie’s existence.

At the edge of the cliff near Girgosh, we will meet a pale woman. The Nameless One can recognize the symbol of the Doomguard on her cloak (if he previously spoke with Haer’Dalis). Furthermore, if we carry a ruined holy symbol (found in the corpse pit in Ysgard), the woman will want us to give it to her – it turns out to be the symbol of Moander, the deity of rot and despair.

A poet near the blacksmith’s stall is trying to compose a poem. If we help him find the right rhymes, we will gain experience points. A step further, we will meet an enlightened cultist sitting in the mud. By pointing out the absurdity of her behavior, we will gain experience points. Nearby, we will also stumble upon an old Jill whose spiteful old husband Jack broke his crown. We can resolve her dilemma by directing her to the Civic Festhall (requires the presence and input of Fall-From-Grace).

If we accepted the quest from Brill to find the gith Ikss’odes, we will find him in one of the local residences. We can ask local shopkeepers for the exact location. Along the way, we’ll learn that the gith hasn’t been seen around lately, and we will be directed to Mare, his girlfriend, who can be found in the Vertical Sea. It turns out Ikss’odes is hiding in his own lair. With a high enough Strength, Intelligence, or Charisma (15), we can convince the woman to give us the key. We can also steal it. If we harm Mare, Ikss’odes will be hostile toward us.

Ikss’odes himself is a desperate, emaciated githzerai. If Dak’kon is in the party, he will interject into the conversation multiple times. Ikss’odes will tell us the story of his wandering and show us a vial of karach – matter of chaos – with which he has lost his bond. He will also explain that he stole the item because he had originally pawned it to the barkeep for money. The slaad promised him the vial would return to his possession after thirty cycles of work but broke his word. The Nameless One can resolve this dispute in one of several ways, including:

  • Reporting to Brill that he found Ikss’odes’ corpse; we can pin his death on Black Joseph
  • Snatching the vial from the gith’s hands
  • Helping complete the ritual to form a gateway from the chaos matter (if Dak’kon is present, we can utilize his knowledge)
  • Forcing Dak’kon to seize control of the karach (which lowers the companion’s morale but boosts his stats: +2 to Strength, Wisdom, and Intelligence)
  • Killing Ikss’odes
  • Stealing the vial

If we chose a peaceful solution or if the karach vial was lost, we will be attacked upon returning to Brill. On the barkeep’s corpse, we will find a special goblet that allows us to bypass the portal trap set by Black Joseph. If we recover the vial for the slaad, we will receive the goblet without a fight.

In the very heart of the area, we will find the library. In the western section, we will find the entrance to Styx Oarsman tavern.
